There are a few ways. Look for some tutorials on the web. The most important thing is to color on a different layer. I like to color on a layer beneath the line art with the line set to Multiply. And lock that layer so you don’t color on it by mistake.

Techniques vary.

Nobody answered your question. Do this – create a new layer and then change the Mode to "Color". That’s what it is there for. Choose the color you wish to paint over something, then the brush and be happy. When you wish to make something else a different color, just go to the color pallet and change it, and paint.

Simple, really.

Choose the color you wish to paint over something, then the brush and be happy. When you wish to make something else a different color, just go to the color pallet and change it, and paint.

It’s a good idea to make each separate colour a separate layer – then if you want to change a colour you change that one only, not the entire colouration job. For example, if you have a red flower on a green background, and you decide that the colour you’ve painted the flower is a bit off, you can change it subtly without changing the green.
