I want to buy a legal, unregistered, registerable copy of Photoshop 6. I see it for sale on craigslist and ebay, but how can I check to make sure I’m buying a legit copy?

Thanks,
Mike

Do not presume to have anyone here "enable" you. Go to a real store and buy your copy – or order through Amazon, or Adobe.

I, like Mike, would like to buy a legal older version of Photoshop. The advice received sofar of buying from a ‘real’ store or Adobe neglects the fact that I have not found that any of these sources are selling older software when their new versions are available. Anyone else have an helpful answer?

Hi Norm,

When I called Adobe they informed me that they haven’t sold version 6 for years.

They also said there’s no way to verify that a used version is unregistered until you try to register it. They definitely won’t verify the registration serial number on the phone ahead of time since people could easily abuse this.

They did say they are still accepting written transfers of ownership from the original registered owner to the new owner. So if you can buy a copy from someone you know and trust that’s the best option I can think of, although probably not very realistic.

On ebay sellers have feedback ratings based on reviews buyers post. There are several versions of Photoshop 6 that are claimed to be unregistered on auction right now, and some of the sellers have 98% or higher ratings. I searched for ‘photoshop 6 unregistered’. This is the best option I can think of at the moment. e.g.:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1 88&item=7103585223&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

Feedback Score: 128
Positive Feedback: 99.2%

• The genuine Adobe Application on original CD — factory sealed • New / Unused / Unregistered
• Authentic Full Version
• Multilingual European edition including English (+ Deutsch + Francais) • In pristine condition
• Full Application – not limited edition – not academic – not an upgrade – not a copy!
• No VAT or other taxes to pay

Good Luck,
Mike

He wants to buy the PS CS upgrade cheaply, without having to pay the full price for PS CS directly. If he can get a legit older copy (ver. 6), and then register it, he can save money. If hsi copy won’t register, he is screwed.

Of course, he’s too crafty to come out and say this directly, because he is a wretched person.

He would rather judge how unhelpful people are that have given him good advice.

Jesus, what the hell is the matter with you? The guy wants, for his own reasons, a legal copy of PS6, that’s all. Adobe no longer sell it by the way. All he wants to know is how he can tell if whatever he finds is legal – he doesn’t want some hormonal rodent jumping down his throat for no reason. Go back to bed for an hour – you’ll feel much better.

There’s no way to "check" before you buy. But it’s a fairly safe purchase, as long as you’re dealing with a seller with a good rating.

No eBay seller will knowingly risk his or her rating for a one-time rip-off sale. And if they consistently rip off people, they’ll be banned from selling under that account.

I bought a NIB (new in box) version of Front Page two or three years ago off eBay — for about half what it cost elsewhere, and it was exactly as advertised.

As someone mentioned, Adobe doesn’t sell Photoshop 6 anymore, so I’d say you’re virtually guaranteed to be safe in buying from eBay.

As long as you make sure the ratings aren’t new. There are people out there creating lots of mail accounts so they can write in and give themselves a positive rating for their scams. Make sure the person with the good rating has one for at least 9 months to a year.

They can’t give feedback without winning an auction. What you have to do is make sure that many of their positives are from winning "feedback" auctions. Pay a penny to get a positive feedback.

On eBay, there is no other way to leave feedback than winning the auction. ALL feedback, positive and negative, is from auction winners.

It is also easy to check to see what each winner bought and what they paid. Just click on their winning item number.

Nobody can "write in" to eBay and leave feedback. Nor can anybody "pay a penny" to win an auction — without their "winning" price being visible to all.

It always pays to be alert for internet scams, but eBay really has gone out of their way to make things as verifiable as possible.

I’ve only bought the one software package from eBay, but I’ve bought a lot of other things, and never had a single problem.

I used photoshop 6 enough to like it, even got a little training in it by a guy who knew it very well, it’s the only version of Photoshop I’ve used. I would like to own a legitimate copy so all of the s/w I use is legal, and so Adobe could get some money from me. I would be happy to buy v6 without the upgradability. From what I’ve read v7 added a healing brush and not much else to justify the u/g cost, and CS has activation issues that a lot of people complained about. Also, since money is a big issue for me right now, all things considered, v6 is just great. I’m still using online tutorials to learn more about it.

It’s too bad Adobe doesn’t have some sort of program in place for people like me: selling older versions w/no upgradability for a somewhat reduced price.

I bought a copy on ebay from a seller called "hardsoft24" and registered it online with adobe and it checked out okay!

The seller is in Germany and speaks fair English – no problem there, but be warned: he’s a bit slow replying to emails. It took him a week to answer an email on two separate occasions. But when I asked, he did email me the product registration key after he received payment. He requires PayPal or direct bank transfer (my bank wanted $40 to do an international wire transfer).

So if you’re patient, Guido Storch "hardsoft24" was a reliable seller in my case, and he has a very high feedback rating on ebay as well.

Good Luck,
Mike
