I get the following error message when trying to display some .PSD files in ACDSee (file association for .PSD is checked):

"This layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image."

Maybe I’ve checked/unchecked something by mistake?

Thanks.

If it wasn’t saved with a preview you are out of luck.

Not many programs other than Photoshop can really open layered psd files. Instead they open the flattened composite preview that is saved with the file if you allow it. This additional preview can inflate the size of the saved file.

In Photoshop Preferences under File Handing (it may vary in different versions) check Always Maximize Compatibility… If that is unchecked you get a box when you save that gives you the option of Maximizing. If that is unchecked then no Preview.

The shareware program Photoline32 can open layered Photoshop files correctly and has many more features than XnView or IrfanView.

Hey edjhann,

Thanks for the Pref tip. It was unchecked, I checked it and now it works. Thanks again.
