hi wonder if anyone can help me, i want to know how i can have an image of an object say an electric drill, and apply another image over it, so it looks like its been painted on, over its surface.

the idea is to still see the drill but it now look like a custom paint job

kind of like this effect

hi

load the picture of your dril.

with marquee tool (or pen etc.) select your dril.
copy and past it into a new layer.
oly dril is visible and rest (background)is transparent !!

delete the background foto!!!.(see layer name)

if it can’t be deleteted, first make it a layer also by double click on it. OK and than delete.

make new layer.

load(for example) a picture of a flag en copy it into the new layer

go with the mouse just on the line between the two layers, flag on top of dril (layers)
hold down the alt key and click the left mouse button.
the piture of the new layer(flag)is now only visible in the selected dril.

Have somewher an example how to fill it like the form of a object!! If interested I try to search for it!!
let me know.

Try "displacement map" in the help files…(or google) play with layers and their modes…

I’m with Marsupliami. Displacement maps and layer blends.

Try this tutorial Ian.
It has a very bad example picture, but it should hopefully achieve the effect you want. But before you do step 7, your gonna have to select your item thru your favorite method (polygon tool, pen tool, magic wand, etc.), and when tutorial
asks you to put your artwork or text in…choose "Edit>Paste Into" your selection. That will make your artwork (flag, etc.) conform to the edges of
your item selected.
And then you will have to tweak around the settings in each step and experiment a bit. Mess with the layer modes, blur and scale settings till you get it right.

Glad to help if I can.
Just be sure to do that selection & paste into thing I mentioned before going on to step 7. And mess with the blending options & opacity in layers. The tutorial calls for "overlay"…but it doesn’t always come out right.
A little fiddling will make it right.
Here’s a really quick test I just did after reading your post to figure it out how to do it for myself.
