Can someone tell me how I can get ‘roughed up edges’ on a picture. I’m sure it must be a really simple effect.

As an example, see the following website (you’ll have to scroll down a little):

http://www.lushlongboards.com/

They have three pictures with roughed up edges.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

These were probably done one of the many plugins for edges and frames, like Extensis PhotoFrame. However, you can easily do this yourself with a second layer (where you paint the edges with white) or even the eraser tool.

Since there are identical
my guess that it would be by using a mask.

1. Make a selection where you want the edge of the effect to be.
2. Enter Quick Mask Mode.
3. Use filters such as:
Filter > Distort > Glass
Filter > Sketch > Torn Edges
You will have to play with the filter to get the look you want.
4. Exit Quick Mask Mode.
5. Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal Selection.

Note: You can’t use Layer Mask on a "Background Layer".

First, try forceful but non-violent intimidation. Many images will give full cooperation. 😉

Actually, try using a layer mask with the paint brush and eraser.

Is there any way to use an image with edge effects over a background layer so the removed portions don’t show up as white?

Of course. Double click on the background layer (the image) to make it a normal layer. Now you can add another layer, fill it with any color you want, and drag it underneath the image layer.

Try experimenting with the Brush Stroke filters (Filters > Brush Strokes) as such…

Use the marquee tool to make a selection (a little in from the edge of the image). Create a layer mask from this selection. Apply one of the Brush Stroke filters.

Hi OM

along with the most excellent responses you have had already may I suggest:

Adobe Photoshop CS Tips and Tricks from the Experts

I don’t remember where I obtained my printout (it has Adobe trademark – so possibly their own website) ah DiNG! remembered!

http://studio.adobe.com/expertcenter/photoshop

Have a look at page 14 – creative photo cropping by Bill Wenmore or Ben Willmore (it is one of them for sure)

I am sure this will compliment the solutions you have already obtained
