I haven’t used my copy since upgrading to PSCS. That said, it never caused any problems on my Win2K machine – I just prefer ACR.

I use Nikon Capture 4.2 all the time; however, since I installed Win xp SP2, it acts a bit quirky. I don’t think it’s Capture; I think it’s that darned service pack that MS had us install. I have several other programs that are acting a bit strange. Not sure what to do about it, but that’s my 2 cents worth.

It’s probably the DEP software AV system. You need to tell DEP not to include the relevant .exe files.

I’ve been using Capture since v2.0, and it is my standard software for handling raw files with my D1H and D1X, which I prefer over ACR. I have never had problems with it, though others may have. There is one glitch that will nix ACR’s full screen of options on NEF files, but that can be fixed by going into \Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-ins\Adobe Photoshop only\Automate\File Formats and deleting two files: Nikon NEF plugin.8bi and Nikon &CC Tiff.8bi. If you don’t find them, look in other plug_in folders .

Other than this, I don’t think you’ll have problem with NC2, 3, or 4–and I presume you have the latter. You can always try it and uninstall if problematic. Check converted raw files against ACR and decide which you like best, and if ACR is your favorite don’t bother with buying NC4 for $100. The original version of ACR was pathetic, IMO, and v2.0 was only a moderate improvement, but the latest v2.3 looks decent–though still not quite up to NC4 standards IMO, being a bit muddy in shadow areas.

NC4 does have a nifty batch mode that’ll allow quick processing of entire folders without interaction. Not sure if ACR can do the same.

A lot of people prefer to use Capture over the Picture Project software. An alternative you might want to consider is to get the free download of Nikon View. It has more limited RAW conversion but it works, hasn’t messed with my computer and as mentioned, it’s free. If you want to use Capture why not set a restore point and give it a try? The worst it’ll likely do is hog system resources as Nikon software seems prone to do. If you’ve got an electric computer you probably won’t notice this, steam ones (like mine) do slow down.
