Profiles from Red River

I buy my paper from Red River. I had horrible results when I tryed to use one of thier downloadable profiles. I wonder if I’m doing somthing wrong? Here is how the tell you set your printer for thier 65 LB. Polar Art: Parameter Required Setting ————————————————–
Paper Setting Watercolor Paper Radiant White Quality 1400dpi
Color Managment NO Color Adjustments High Speed OFF
Edge Smoothing OFF
Black Ink Installed Matte Black

Ok, I think I understand all the above. My screen was calibrated useing Monaco EZ color.
I not sure what they mean by "NO Color Adjustments" in the above table. I tryed it with color managment turned off and turned on. Eather way my color proof is way too pink!

Has anyone had good luck using Profiles from Red River?

Hi Dave,

Color management, particularly matching printer to monitor, is a continuing issue for Photoshop as well as any other image editing program. Although you have provided some specifics, some important details are missing – OS, version of PS, etc – so my reply below is a bit on the generic side, it will provide you with a systematic way to configure and test your system.

I recommend that you not rely too on your screen for printer adjustment. Print a gray step wedge, such as this one
http://www.curvemeister.com/downloads/TestStrip/digital_test _strip.htm and look for color casts on your screen (indicating a bad monitor profile) or your printed output (indicating a color problem in your printers color config)

They mean keep all the printer color adjustments at their default (zero) settings.

This makes me think either you’re not using Printer Color Management when you print, or you have the printer driver configured to ignore ICM. Or both 🙂 Check out Ian Lyons’s article mentioned at the end of my response.

Some paper companies rely on informally submitted profiles from customers, so it’s a YMMV kind of thing. Post a pointer to the profile – or take a look at it yourself with the profile plotter action and look for jaggies or other unattractive aspects to the profile:

I think I and others can be much more helpful if I know what OS you are running under, and what type of printer you are using. Post a url to the relevant profile as well, and perhaps some of us who are "profile enabled" will take a look and see if it’s reasonable looking.

Meantime, take a look at Ian Lyon’s page on how to set up your printer and color management under Photoshop. There are procedures here for several versions of Photoshop. There is other good material on Ian’s page as well, so you may want to look around.

I would finish with a warning about spending much money on software and devices that purport to solve your screen and printer color issues. Instead develop a systematic way to adjust your color settings, use your own common sense and ability to see color differences, and hold on to your money. —

Thank you for the response Mike. YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD, when you told me to check my ICM setting!
I had to go to: Page Setup, Properties,Main, Advanced to find a reference to ICM. Once there, I discovered that under Color Management there was a dot next to "Color Controls". I moved this dot to ICM. That fixed it!!!!!!! The screen proof looked much better and the printed picture was dead on with the colors.
"ICM" who knew??!?! You did………

I have been reading "Real World Color Management". This color stuff is starting to all come together for me. I’m starting to understand what can be done and what is next to imposable to do. I had managed to make my own profile for this paper type that has been working OK, but it took me a lot of trail and errors and lots of ruined paper and wasted ink. Now I won’t be afraid to try other papers, as long as I can get a good profile with them.

Here are some of the details that you asked for:
I’m running PS 7 on a PC
Printer is an Epson Stylus PHOTO 2200 with Matte black ink. The profile I used is named "rr_premmatte_2200_1440_MK" when you download it from: http://www.redrivercatalog.com/
It is supposedly made for Red River’s Prem Matte Crd C1S #1443 This rather heavy paper is cut to 5×7 inches. When you install the profile is shows up "RR Polar Art Epson 2200 1440dpi MK.icc"from within PS Print Space, Profile.

I have already bought and use the Monaco EZ color and their colorimeter. It worked very well to get my two screens to match.
I have both a ViewSonic VP181 LCD screen turned 90 degrees (portrait) and a Sony Multiscan E400 CRT.

You made my day. I now have all the pieces of this puzzle fitting together. I’m now finally able to take a picture of something with my 35 mm camera, scan the Negative with my Nikon LS-2000 using VueScan, play with colors in PS to make them the way I want them, and print them very close to the way they look on the screen. I’m a happy guy.

I’ll look into the hypertext that you provided, but you have already solved my problem.
