It looks like the function of the Transparency Shapes Layer option, when selected, is to constrain the effects of the Style to the layer fill pixels. It also looks like that to deselect it, in effect, distributes the ‘internal effects’ of the Style not just across the artboard but across the entire canvas thereby shifting any ‘external effects’ off of the canvas entirely – even when used in conjunction with the Blend Interior Effects as Group setting. Is that what is happening generally or just in the limited tests I have done – if so why? I cannot think of a good reason for that behavior. However, that does not stop me from speculating so here are my guesses. First – This is some kind of data exchange setting used to get PS Style information to other less transparency aware applications. Second – This is some kind of legacy issue where pre CS2 PS users expect a different behavior and this is how Adobe has accommodated them.
Third – This is actually a very useful effects setting used to do something I have not yet figured out.
Can someone please clear up my confusion about how or under what circumstances the Transparency Shapes Layer setting should be used?
Thanks,
Ron
