I have been trying to make an effect of focus depth of field on a dead sharp edge to edge image in PS7. I want focus to appear realistic: from out-of-focus foreground, to in-focus-subject, to out-of-focus background. I got as far as making a copy of the image, then Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur 3 pixels, which makes the whole image out-of-focus. The idea is for -the graduated mask to gradually reveal the in focus copy beneath the out of focus image on top, thus giving the effect of depth of field. At this point, I’m stuck. Any ideas? A million thanks in advance, Cliff Moore

You’re on the right track, What you need to do now is add a layer mask to the copy and with a real soft edged brush paint away the area that you want to reveal.

You can do this with a gradient with black and white in the foreground and background, in the options for the gradient tool, use FOREGROUND TO TRANSPARENT, do as you did, dupe the image in the layers palette, blur it, add a layer mask to the blurred copy, then drag from top to bottom or bottom to top with the gradient, just make sure you have black set up in the foreground of your foreground background boxes in the toolbar.

If you intend to do a realistic graduated blur, I suggest either to upgrade to PSCS and use its new lens blur effect, or if you stick with PS7, look into this page: <http://www.osborn.bz/dof/>
