Hi,

Why use Slices? I find Image maps to be much better. I assume their must be a penalty but is it really that big?

Thanks,
Ron

They do different things.

An image map is a way to set up a picture so that when you click on different parts of the picture, you go to different pages.

Slices are a way to cut an image into many images, and then re-assemble those images in a table to make the original picture.

Slices are used whenever you want to have rollovers–part of an image that change when the mouse passes over them–or whenever you want to do things that simple HTML does not permit, such as placing HTML text within an image.

Hi tacit,
You can see here:

That I am using image maps to add a rollover. Are you saying that I should not be doing it this way or that Slices are better for this kind of thing?

Thanks,
Ron

I just wanted to add that I like the Image maps because they support non-rectangular shapes and my buttons are round.

The advantage to making slices, and then confining your rollover to one specific slice, is that you can control ow large the slice is, and so control how much has to be downloaded to the browser to make the rollover work.

Try this link. Read the warning text at the bottom, but do it anyway. http://www.digoliardi.net/sh/

There’s a case where a slice is replaced by another, leaving the rest alone so you don’t have to replace the entire picture.
