Hey everyone. Well, this might be easy, but I’m not very good at photoshop. I need to know how I can apply a gradient on my image, but to just one section of my background. For example, in this instance, I have a grid, and I want to apply a gradient to the grid in black and white, but not the white background.
Later on I want to apply a gradient to just individual letters in my text, but not others. Could someone explain how I can do this? thanks!

One way to do it is use the magic wand and click anywhere on the black grid lines. Since it’s all connected, it should make a nice, clean selection. Add a new layer. Now, use the gradient tool and create the desired effect. The gradient will only appear within your selection, which is in the shape of the grid.

Just one way to do it, I’m sure there are many more. HTH!

The key is simply to select what you want the gradient applied to, and then apply it.

Or – make sure the layer you want to apply the gradient to is the active layer, then click on the lock button at the top left of the layers palette, then apply the gradient and it only affects the active layer.
