With Photoshop, is there a way to simply batch covert a collection of JPG images, located is a series of nested folders, to uncompressed TIFF? I’d like the TIFFs to end up in the same folder as the original JPEG.

Record an action saving a (sample) file to TIFF. Then batch process the files to convert them.

Thanks Rene. Unfortunately this won’t work. If I record this action (e.g. saving c:\temp\test.jpg as c:\temp\test.tif) and then run the action as a droplet (e.g. on several jpg images in d:\images), all the tif files are saved to c:\temp. Is there a way to modify the action to save to the originating folder?

In the Batch dialog box, choose Save and Close as your Destination, tick Include Subfolders and Override Action Save As Commands. You must have a Save As Tiff in the action of course to do what you want to do but ticking that box will cause the action to ignore the destination from the action and just save them in the same folder as the files are in.

Al,

You can also give a try to Visere which supports a batch conversion utility

Mick:

There’s good news and (I think) bad news:
Good call on this here: The "Save and close" + "Include all subfolders" combo will result of multiple folders in the same pass plus putting the processed images in their original folders, but…

As far as I can tell "Save and close" and "Override Action ‘save as’ commands" are mutually exclusive = it looks like for each image one would need to reply to the TIF options dialog generated by the Save As… command.

It’s late, so try this to see if I just need sleep. 🙂

I tried this and a few other variations before posting and it works for me – no dialogs. I usually specify a destination folder when doing batch file conversions so I’ve not done this before but it does seem to work. If you don’t tick the Override box, it will save to the folder specified in the recorded action. It is necessary to have this step in the action to change file format. You might have a better way – your knowledge of actions is vastly greater than mine.

Mick, Danny,

I tried your suggestions. I have a Save to TIFF action specified but when I go to the Batch dialog box, the ‘Override Action Save As’ option is greyed-out when I select ‘Save and Close’ as the destination. If I choose ‘Folder’ as the destination then ‘Override Action Save As’ becomes available but it wants me to specify a destination folder. Am I missing something here?

Save and close means you save over the images that were opened by the action. You therefore cannot choose a different folder for it.

I’m a bit confused. I’m using CS by the way. I only see the Override Action greyed out when I choose None as the destination. It’s available for both Save and Close and for Folder. Obviously you don’t want Folder as this will save in the specified Folder.

For me Save and Close works and saves in the original folder. I have a simple action which just saves as TIFF. To record the action in the first place there has to be a destination specified to change the file format. If I don’t tick the Override box, then all the files are saved into the folder specified in the action.

Mick, on my system it’s definitely greyed-out for ‘None’ and ‘Save and Close’. I’m using PS 7.0 on WinXP Pro (I haven’t upgraded to CS yet). Could this be the problem?

That’s it Alan. I don’t have 7 but I just opened up 6 and it is greyed out.

Okay, thanks Mick. Looks like it’s time to upgrade.

I wouldn’t put you off the upgrade Alan. I love CS.

Mick:

The light goes on. You’ve enlightened me to a subtle CS difference in the batch dialog. I should have mentioned I’m using PS7 which explained the mutual exclusivity of the settings not present in CS.

This is a good thing to know. Thx for clarifying that.

It never occurred to me that this would be a CS thing. Simple but it’s a definite improvement. I usually batch save to a new folder so I never even noticed this before. I learn a lot from this forum one way or another.
