Hi,

I’m looking you a photoshop plugin (or an external software, if recommended) to perform this task:

I’ve got a camera with a fish eye lense. In the photos the lens captures the camera tripod. So I take a second photo of the floor with the tripod removed and use this to fix the floor image. Here I need help:

I want to morph a second image into a first image that
is not to be morphed – I would identify points in both images and then ask the plugin to bend the second image so that it would fit into the first.

The first image is not to be morphed at all, instead I’d put the second image into a different layer and then copy some bits.

Any recommendations?

I would use Photoshop. All you need to do is place the second image in a new layer on top of the one you want to fix. It doesn’t sound like much of the "new" image is needed–just the part that will "cover" the tripod in the original one. For safety, lock the original layer to prevent it from being altered. Then delete mush of the unnecessary parts of new picture and change the opacity to around 60% so you can see through to the original image. Go to EDIT > TRANSFORM > DISTORT and drag each corner to a place where the image looks the closest to being aligned with the image beneath. If the new image wasn’t taken with a fish eye lens, you may need to make more adjustments. The Liquify Command may come in handy for this, if such tweaking is necessary…CTRL+SHFT+X in the versions of Photoshop that have this tool or FILTER > LIQUIFY in Photoshop 7 and up–IMAGE > LIQUIFY in version 6. Check the backdrop box and set the opacity to 100%. Use the bloat or pucker tool at a low brush pressure, say 25 or so which will allow for a slow rate of change.

See http://home.comcast.net/~corey_cowan/wens_class/html/lesson0 3.htm for more Liquify Tool explanations.

Once you have the layer matching pretty closely, feather the edges of the new layer to blend it even more.

Corey 🙂

"Peadge" …

Hi Corey,

thanks for the tips.

I tried this before posting the question and was not satisfied. While I got acceptable results, I never achived a perfect match and wasted a lot of time trying. In the photoshop 6 I still use the liquify tool does not show the other layers so it’s pretty useless to me.

In my search I found Smartmorph
(http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/SmartMorph).
When I export the two images as bmp, I can import the result as a masked layer and use parts of that to cover the tripod. I get incredible matches in under 15 minutes that way.

I’d prefer a photoshop morphing plugin, but until then this tool should do.
