Change foreground color of contour grid?

Hi, I have an image problem that I am unable to solve in PhotoShop and am looking for solution tip. I have a transparent gif file that contains contour map grid lines.

members.csolutions.net/fisherka/astronote/observed/MUndarum/ ContourTransparent.gif

The grid lines are in black and the background is transparent. I would like to layer this over an existing photograph, but in black, the contour lines do not stand out.

I would like to change the contour lines to bright red. After studying PhotoShop manuals and tip guides, I am at a loss of how to do it.

Any ideas on how to approach this?

You can add a Style, reduce the fill opacity to zero and add a red color overlay.

try this
open the photo
drag the contour map over it
on that layer try some different blend modes
one of them should rid the white areas
if the lines have to be red maybe use selective color layer?

or you will have to get rid of the white by selecting it maybe dupe the black lines layer and move one pixel up and to the side to make it thicker?
or feather/blur it a bit
change black to red effects layer on color overlay

There are always a number of ways to do anything in Photoshop. Since the background is transparent you can choose to change the color of only the non-transparent pixels, effectively chaging the color of the lines. Drag the contour image onto the photo image. After that, it’s simple:

1. In the Layers palette, with the contour-line layer selected, click the icon at the top of the palette that shows a checkerboard. This prevents the transparent pixels from being changed.

2. Make sure red is your foreground color. Fill the layer with red with the keyboard combination alt-delete (Mac=option-delete). The black lines become red and the background stays transparent.

Your image opened as a RGB Flattened with a white background when I downloaded it.. If you have a transparent GIF load it into photoshop, change it from Indexed Color to RGB via Image/Mode… Using Magic Wand tool select the transparent area making sure the tolerance is set to 0, anti-aliased is checked, contigous is UN-checked and use all layers is checked or not… Shift+control+I to invert the selection thereby selecting the black– Change your foreground color to whatever you want IE.. R>251, G>0, B>0 … Press Alt+Backspace… Select move tool and drag it wherever you want
