Hi,
How can I increase the contrast in the petals of this flower without shifting the colors so much? Is this the place to use Curves?

I have placed a copy here for viewing:

Or download the larger jpg here:

BTW, this has not been sharpened or adjusted.

Thanks,
Ron

Absolutely – curve the Lightness channel in Lab mode and Bob’s your uncle. —

Beautiful, that worked great. My first successful, non-drug related, excursion into another space.

Thanks,

It’s nice how I can drag the cursor around on the petals to find what part of the curve needs to be steepened. Who knows, in a few more months I may be ready for your class.

Another way is to copy the image to a new layer, and set the layer mode to Luminosity. Then use Curves on that layer.

Though it gives a different result from working in Lab, this can be another good alternative, with one caveat. It’s beneficial to adjust the individual RGB channels, and not the RGB master curve. For a yellow flower, the red and green channels should be lightened and steepened, but not the blue channel, since this adds no detail or contrast to the flower. —

Hi Johan,

Thanks for the tip. I am not sure but it seems yellow is so sensitive to shifts.
I tried a third method I that was suggested off-list which I think turned out especially nice. You can see the before and after here in this web album:

http://picasaweb.google.com/ronviers/YellowMacro

The first flower was done using curves on the L channel. The second and third are before and after using a method of blending the L channel back on itself with the Apply Image while viewing the adjustments in a separate New Window and tuning the blend with Fade and opacity. I did a separate blend on the leaves, stamen and petals. I think the color and contrast in the petals are very nice.

Thanks,
Ron
