why is copy merged (for when you want to copy more than one layer at once) grayed out?? this has happened to me a number of times, still can’t tell why it does that.. (I do have top layer of all layers I want to copy selected..) thank you for helping me solve a big headache..

Is the layer locked? And don’t the layers have to be merged before you can copy "merged"? Otherwise,Photoshop may not "know" what you’re trying to copy.

no, layer was not locked… and no, layers don’t need to be merged.. the way it works is that whenever you’re on a layer, if instead of hitting just ‘copy’ you hit ‘copy merged’ (or ctrl-shift-c) it copies ALL visible layers, then when you paste in other file it pastes everything together as one layer.. I use a lot when I’m cutting imgs for the web from a mock-up.. but every once in a while ‘copy merged’ is grayed out in edit menu, and I still haven’t been able to figure out why it does that.. ok.. thank you for your response..
