I have a 3 week old CS with no problems ’til now running on new Dell 8300 2.6 with 1gb of RAM, XP Pro. Hyperthreading is not active. Repeatedly, Magnetic Lasso will let me get about 15 to 20 points down (width 3px, contrast 1% [it’s faint, thin line image segment I’m selecting], Freq 2) then blanks out my PS window leaving all the title bars, frames, etc in place but replacing all other contents with a beige background. The ML tool icon still shows along with the last few points. I can keep using the ML tool and it lays down a selection line that matches the edge I was working before the image disappeard. If I hit ESC, it all comes back but the ML points are all gone, though the ML tool stays active. I’ve disabled Multi Processor support after seeing a thread about the Magic Wand, I’ve upped the amount of RAM available to PS, I’ve uninstalled my pen tablet, I’ve rebooted and restarted, but it happens every time. Have read a lot of forum posts, FAQs and searched, but can’t find a mention of this. Can’t reach Tech Support on the weekend. Anybody know what the heck is going on?

Ummm…turn off hardware video acceleration?

I’m not a Windows guy, so until one comes along, give that a try. I hear it can solve a lot of display gremlins.

David,

That does sound likely to be a video driver issue. As Phos says, as a diagnostic, try Hardware Acceleration down to zero. If that helps it is definitely a vid.driver problem. Check for updated drivers.

I don’t think there is any problem with hyperthreading. The problems reported were related to multi-processor dual Xeon systems.

If you discover that Len’s suggestion does not work, I would guess that this might be a processor-related problem, possibly due to you disabling hyperthreading. Magnetic lasso is a really processor-intensive tool. When I had a bad processor, using this would cause the whole machine to crash. I’d suggest re-enabling hyperthreading and seeing if it still happens.

Actually, it doesn’t solve anything. Rather as Len says, it’s a diagnostic. If the symptoms disappear, it’s a sure sign of a bad video driver.

Thanks for the advice. I turned Hardware Acceleration down, not off, and it did stop the problem. Interestingly, I then turned it back up to full (in increments, trying the ML tool in between), and then it worked fine with HA on full. I’ll need to go in search of a video driver.

Thanks for that important distinction and clarification, Bob.

Even though I don’t like the Windows OS, I like to know enough about it to help where I can occasionally.

It works along the same lines as killing the MMX Core plug in. It actually breaks more than it fixes.
