I’d just like to report that I’m seeing some of the same slow-downs as other with PS CS. I JUST purchased a new dell. Specs:

WinXP Pro
2.8GHz, HT, 800FSB
HD1 = 120GB 7200rpm
HD2 = 20GB 7200rpm
1GHz Dual Channel DDR RAM
Onboard Video (until ATI 9800 gets here)
Creative Labs 5.1 Digital Sound Card

Whenever I purchase a new machine from a major manufacturer, I completely wipe it and start with a fresh install of the OS and drivers (I find it’s the easiest way to get all the crap off and they always end up running much smoother). I’ve setup two page files (one on each drive).

Issue:

Whenever I use some of the filters (i.e. Poster Edges) it takes FOREVER to even open up the filter menu and it bumps up my page file to over 800+ MB’s! To make matters worse, I can’t really use any other program I might have open on the computer (although this happens with ONLY PS open as well) as the entire computer slows to a crawl.

Everything I’ve tried at this point (after searching the forums):

1) Tried turning off hyperthreading… no luck (although I’d be miffed if it actually worked as I use a LOT of other programs then Photoshop)
2) Disconnected from my network to see if that would help. Nope. I haven’t had a chance to connect up to my network printer yet, so that isn’t an issue either.
3) Closed the Histogram window. No change.
4) I’ve turned off High Quality Previews and Background Processing.
5) Tried changing zoom ratio. No go.
6) Tried re-creating page files. No go.

So… anybody have any other ideas? Or do I just wait for the dot release<g>

[edit] One more thing, I’ve installed PS7 and all is well. I know that PS8 and PS7 are two different monsters, but the point remains that PS7 works well (does not have the annoyingly long slow-downs) and PS8 doesn’t.

I’d start here sonic:

your machine sounds exactly like mine spec wise, ‘cept mine’s not a dell. cs runs great on my box.

UPDATE!

Well, I am completely perplexed. I was about ready to go try Len’s suggestions. So I opened up the performance monitor, launched PS CS, opened the SAME file I’ve been working with this whole day(just a 1MB jpg file) and used the SAME filter I had been testing with before… it came right up.

I have not rebooted the computer since the last time I tried (about an hour ago) and had the problem. The ONLY thing I’ve done is re-launched Photoshop. But I don’t get it, I relaunched it EVERY time I tried one of the things I mentioned above that I had tried.

This is screwy. Hopefully it will be fine from here on out. <<scratces head, decides to have a scotch>>

This would explain a lot.
