PS3: smart filters and layer mask

Hello,

first excuse me if this is a basic or already treated question.

I often use the technique of the two combined images to increase my pictures’ dynamic range. I have the two photos as two layers in an image in PS. I add a layer mask to the top layer, I paint in the layer mask and, if necessary, I apply a gaussian blur to the layer mask to fade out the transition.

I am experimenting with PS3’s non-destructive smart filters. Now I would like to apply a non-destructive gaussian filter to my layer masks, not to the image layer but to the layer mask linked to it. I don’t want the image blurred but the mask, with the new smart filters.

How can I do that?

Hi,
You can achieve the results you are after by moving your mask to a new layer above your working layer then invert it and set it to screen blend mode then apply your smart filter to the new layer. I think this will give you effectively the smart mask you’re looking for. I do not have CS3 three to test it though.

Good luck,
Ron

Why not use the "Merge to HDR" feature, both in CS2 and (faster) in CS3. You don’t have to worry about masks and can use many more than two pictures to archive an extremely high dynamic range.

I hope this helps,

Mike

Save your mask as a channel, that way you can always reload it.
