Resizing images for the Web; should I use Lightroom?

I have a large number of images which I want to resize automatically, using different rules for landscape and portrait formats, and then save for the Web with the minimum file size.

I have been recommended to use Adobe Lightroom, but I get the impression that it has a lot of features I don’t particularly need, and that if I install it will take over my computer, like it or not.

Is it worth purchasing for this particular task, or is there some other program which would be better for the purpose? Also I get the impression that the fancy new features in Photoshop CS3 do not include these functions. Is this correct?

Either will perform that task quite handily. Both have a free 30 day trial.

You could give the latest (free) version of Irfanview view a try! I find it invaluable for these sort of tasks!
