not a graphics/adobe guy.

This one will be obvious to anybody who is.

I’m working on a 800wx300h image.

inside of which I want an 800×300 rectangular image with linear gradient background color, the rest if transparent with other images on top. I create a new layer and use the Rectangular Marquee tool to select the area before using the gradient tool to color it.. dumb question is.. the Rectanguar tool continues to display the outline.. how do I save the save so that it’s not waiting for me to do something else? I’m sure my approach is wrong.

Thanks for any help or information.

it’s a old version.. 5.0

when I hover over it the tool tip reads rectangular Marquee tool(M) and it’s looks like a rectangular dashes. I figured out that if I select something else (while that option is on) i then hit escape it goes away, but if I do anything else like or go to another layer, it remains. I think I have that work around – likely just the way the product works and force of habits. Thanks anyways.

Can you just deselect in the select menu?

sorry, where is that option?

I read the help under the deselection command and it said ..

"You make selections by clicking and dragging with the marquee, lasso, polygon lasso, or magnetic lasso tool, or by targeting color areas with the magic wand tool or the Color Range command. The choices associated with a selection tool appear in its Options palette. Making a new selection replaces the existing one."

btw,while I’m here, on 5.0,

what is the hand tool used for?
What’s the best way to round corners on a square item?

Ctrl-D for Deselect. It is in the Select menu.

The hand moves you around the canvas when zoomed in.

When you say "item" what do you mean? A Marquee? Filled rectangle? In 5 there are no Shape tools, so you have to either composite it with circle shapes or make a rectangular marquee and blur it and then sharpen. Or draw it with the Pen tool. Or make it in another program and import it. You really should upgrade.
