Bella,

Open Photoshop (PS) and go to File>New or File>Open. Make sure you have the layers palette open (F7 button) You should have either a blank composition or a background of your choice.

Open the photos of your kids and press the letter Q on your keyboard (This is for Quick Mask) Don’t worry about explainations about masking, it takes a while. Press B for brush and colour in your kids with the brush tool. (They’ll turn red but don’t worry, this is masking)

Once you have the images of your kids painted red, press Q again. This takes you out of masking mode and you’ll see loads of dotted lines. (This is called a SELECTION. Remember this ‘cos PS uses selections a lot)Then press Ctrl+I holding down Ctrl button. This will invert your selection. You should have your kid/s within the dotted lines.

Press Ctrl+C, this will copy the "Kid" selection you have made and put it into "Windows" clipboard. Highlight the background (BG) image you loaded or the blank composition and press Ctrl+V to "paste" the image onto the BG you’re working on.

If you then notice on the layers palette, you have now one or more EXTRA layers. This is because PS has put then stacked on top of the BG. Try and imagine layers as many stacks of plastic film on top of each other and can be moved around and adjusted.

Continue the masking process til you have all kids and on different layers for working on on the same BG.

Once you do this, come back and we’ll tell you what other processess can be used but rest assured if you go to the help manual you can pick up tips. It would be appreciated if you read the help files VERY often as it’s best to overcome a problem with a little bit of knowledge.

The above process is a kick start and should take you a few weeks to understand the concept AND terminology which not knowing will slow you down.

Hope this helps and you may get additional advice from others but please come back and let us know how you get on.

Regards

Mark

Hi all,
I am also new to Photoshop 7.
when I try to do this, after pressing B for brush and using the brush the image turns green, instead of red, and after pressing Q no dotted lines appear,
I am doing something wrong but what?
Mick.
