I just received some .psd files that I can’t open. I’d like to be able to open and view these files, and be able to do some basic photo editing. I am not a graphics expert and I don’t think I need (nor can I afford) the full Adobe Photoshop program.

Is there a junior version of Adobe Photoshop (e.g. Photoshop Elements?), or any other program for that matter, that can open .psd files and do basic photo editing?

Thanks!

Yes, Elements will open the files. If you have a later Macintosh, they are opened by Preview, too.

Yes, there are a few. Elements was already mentioned. But you can get the GIMP for free here http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ which IIRC handles ..psd files as well.
And there are probably a few others (free or not) capable of opening/editing psd files.

Irfanview will open them.

Irfanview will open PSD files and is free. Editting capabilities are minimal though.

But it will convert to other file types.

And, FWIW, the Macintosh can open PSD files and save as other formats in their simple and free Preview program.
