exporting to icons with alpha

Hi guys, maybe iv’e got the wrong end of the stick here, but can icons have alpha channels?

Im trying to export a png-24 into a .ico, and it the image in it has a shadow (a gradient – black to transparant) is this possible in ico format? or do icons only support png-8/gif style alpha channels?

All ICO files have a 1-bit transparency mask. "XP-style" 32-bit icons also have an 8-bit alpha channel. You can use my Photoshop ICO format plugin to make one – free download from
