I’m new to Photoshop and would like to know how to make a pumpkin carving template out of a picture. I know Photoshop (I’m using 6.0) has many filters that apply different affects to a picture.

Is there a filter that might work on a color picture to turn it into something that can be used as a template to carve into a pumpkin?

Thanks in advance for any help…

Since your ultimate tool will likely be a knife, you will want to turn the photo into a two color image, where only one of the colors will be cut out (black and white) and then create a template with lines that are easy to follow. This can be done by changing the color mode to grayscale and adjusting the brightness/contrast settings to the extreme, or by saving the image as a GIF in tow colors.

You may want to visit Adobe Studio Exchange (http://share.studio.adobe.com/) and search for free custom shapes that relate to Halloween. Then print the custom shape filled with black.

Here’s a link with patterns and a "how to" guide. http://www.pumpkinlady.com

Googling "Pumpkin carving templates" or "Jack O’lantern templates" may yield more results.

Thanks for the tips,

I was hoping there was some filter within PS that would turn a color photo into that two color style you see on templates.

I tried a few and might be able to use the Sketch – Sponge.

If anyone else can think of a filter that might work better, please let me know…thanks.

Try opening the photo, converting to grayscale (Image >Mode > Grayscale) and then adjusting the contrast all the way up (Image >Adjust> Brightness/Contrast). Now use the brightness slider to fine tune. You’ll get an image sort of like the Marlboro man.

What a great, fun site. I didn’t need any pumpkin templates just now, but bookmarked the site for later, who knows?

Thanks for "the pumkin lady,"
