Hello:

I use Photoshop Elements for basic graphics editing, but it takes quite a while to load up. Can someone recommend a simple, free JPEG viewing program, and where I can find it.

I use this freeware:

http://www.xnview.com/

it takes about one second to load on my 1 GHz PC.

Irfanview is a popular, and free, choice. I use it all the time. See here – http://www.irfanview.com .

If all you want is a viewer, you already have one. Use your web browser.

Take you pick – the choice is yours:
Picasa
Visere
IrfanView
XnView

All are free to good homes (non-commercial, domestic use) or so I understand

I have all 4 and switch from one to the other upon needs.

Picasa is my favourite.

Some viewers prepare a little file eg Picasa. With these browsers the best things to do is to open them up and let them search for the images on your drive(s)

It’s a technicality but once the images have been cached they tend to be a bit more responsive in use

ps – have phun! do a google "free image browser" or on the products listed above
There are more …

Ultimately I always find myself opening Acdsee, dammit. Although Vesere is pretty nice.

I second this choice. I’ve used this free program for years and have installed it on many many PCs for friends and neighbors, Anybody who just needs a fast way to look at pics.

But it doesn’t stop there… It displays EXIF info, had a built in slideshow, autoscales images to fit, has a ‘lossless jpeg rotation’ feature, thumbnail viewing, simple image editting (color depth, crop, resize/resample, etc) and will run simple photoshop style plugins! All this and it loads in an instant and takes virtually no HD space.

All in all, one of the best freeware programs out there!

Thanks for the suggestions.

My only significant complaint about Irfanview is that, if the image is larger than the screen (and I have Irfanview set up to shrink the image to fit the window), any edges in the image look pretty jagged when shrunk even a little bit.

Do you find that any of the other programs you mention are better, with this particular issue? Or, is it an unavoidable effect of the shrinking?

Answers from anyone would be appreciated.

Ensure that on the Options->Properties->Viewing tab you check the Use "Resample" for Fit-Options. That should improve the image quality after resampling.

Will check that, and correct if needed — thanks!

I’ve meanwhile tried Xnview on my office machine, and it’s impressive.

Also tried Picasa, but didn’t (yet) find how to make it a simple and fast viewer, without the big console and editing features that Photoshop users don’t need and, in my case anyway, don’t want.

VuePro – it is inexpensive and very, very handy. Makes wallpapers a piece of cake and runs slideshows. Allows editing. I have used it for years and would not be without it.
