This topic has been posted before but I haven’t seen a solution or explanation.

In PS CS, and 6 (not sure about 7) the marquee will not snap to guides as it should, it will fall one pixel left or right of the guide.

There has been talk of guides falling on a half pixels causing the selection to shift, but why should that be an issue? If I hide the guides and do a zoom-in manual selection, I can get the selection to fall exactly where the guide was placed?

In 5.5 and below this wasn’t an issue. At 100% zoom you could make a really sloppy selection with the marquee just close to the guides and it would snap-to without a problem. When you are cutting up a site manually, without using slices, this is a real pain and it forces me to keep 5.5 installed on my computer for this purpose alone.

This is really frustrating so any help would be appreciated.

Jeff, sorry about this but do you have >snap to selected? I know with v7 and CS i was able to snap with 1 pixel precision, very useful actually.

Why not download the CS trial and give it a go

Turn off "Snap to", magnify up as needed, align to guide then marquee. It’s a hassle, but if one pixel right or left is critical then give it a try.

Mark, yeah, I have snap to selected turned on, I’m running CS which is where the problem seems to exist.

I’ve done a bit more testing and I’ve found something very strange:

If I start with a new canvas at 100% and randomly drag out guides and then use them to make a selection, everything is fine – the marquee snaps to guides no problem. However, if I’ve zoomed in on an area and again randomly drag out guides and then zoom out and use them to make a selection, I then have the problem of the selection being off by a pixel one side or another.

I also notice that if I zoom in an area that had guides where the snap-to function was working fine, if I move a guide, zoom out and try to make another selection, then the marquee no longer snaps? Bizarre.

I wonder if there is a correlation between magnification and guide positioning? Sort of like how in Flash a tool is relative to the magnification of the stage (ie. the same brush size will draw a different line width depending on how magnified you are when you use it).

Any thoughts on that?
