Hello,

I am designing a tradeshow booth graphic where the final print size will be 89 1/2" H x 156 1/2" W. My original image is 500 dpi and is 9 1/2" H x 9 1/2" W. The specs require this to be in 1/4 scale which is 22 1/2" H x 39" W. If I start out with 500 dpi and expand the image to the spec sizes, how do I figure out what my final dpi will be.

Also, If I design an image in photoshop and I want the final image to be 300 dpi print quality and the final size to be about 35" diameter and I created it at 1200 dpi in 1/4 scale, will it be the same quality as designing it in full scale at 300 dpi.

Sorry if this all sounds confusing, but any help, tutorials, reference books or anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Cris

Chris, the mathematics related to your questions is all really quite simple, but really, since Photoshop will do it all for you, there is no need for "figuring" on your part.

Simply launch Photoshop and access the File > New dialog, (Ctrl+N). Plug in your starting size & resolution, and click OK. Now go to Image > Image Size, deselect Resample Image and enter the desired final output size, or resolution, and the other values will change accordingly.

The answer to your second question is ‘yes.’

I hope that helps.

Thanks John,

The reason that I was trying to figure out the formula is to see if my image would work. I need the final output to be at least 100 dpi for the print specs at full size. I don’t know if this image is too small to work with and to have a final output that is so large. I don’t know where the original image came from. I may need to purchase another stock photo. If I have to do this, what size and resolution should I look for? Where do people who design for tradeshow booths get their photos from?

Thanks,

Cris

Set it up full size and then scale it back down to the way they want it.

I can’t set up a full size image that large. It would take forever to make any changes because of the file size.

It’s the same size regardless. 300 dpi at 10×10 is the same as 100 at 30×30.
