I can’t figure out to draw a path so that the two ends points do not connect.

Just don’t connect them. When you are content with the path, then control+click anywhere in the image to deselect the path. Done.

Use the pen tool, not the shapes tool.

And the purpose of an open-ended path would be?…

I’m trying to draw a triangle.. or rather 2 sides of a triangle and the open end "connects" no matter what tool I use..

I’m new to AI 10, what obvious things am I missing?

I am trying to draw a "valve", the kind in a heart, only need 2 lines, but the endpoints connectand make a triangle…

It sounds like you are making a vector mask. (because that is what PS does by default with the pen tool, and you shouldn’t do this if you want an open path). Start instead with the path menu and select "new path". Click your three points and then stroke the path.

Are you using Photoshop or Illustrator?

Well … knowing you stroke paths – a curvey line instead of a curvey loop? Thanks John.

You can use the help files to see how to trace around a teapot, but I am redrawing a quick map to escape copyright artwork and the particular line I am drawing a rail line that starts and stops without looping.

It looks as though I’ll have flip back and forth between AI and PS. Painful. Nice tease that path thing was for wanting to draw a quick curvey line. Anyone know how to get a suggestion into the PS wishlist?

Dan gave you the answer back there Mr Toad.

Use the pen tool, not the shapes tool.

That way you make a path in the paths palette, not a vector shape on a shape layer which will come along with a fill which will appear to connect the first and 3rd points to make a triangle, just as drawing a path in Illy with a fill will do.

So just draw with the pen tool in PS and leave it openended. Then stroke it. (Can we say that here?)

Thanks Philo – that was the ticket. I was creating the path with the pen tool (not using New path) and then using Blending options to stroke. That’s where I couldn’t figure out how to stop the stroke from connecting the two end points. Your method was what I was looking for and couldn’t seem to find in the help files.

I recently bought Photoshop 7 and I can’t figure out how to make the text in a circular shape. I’ve been making the text in Illustrator and then importing it into Photoshop but then if I want to do any changes I have to redo the text in Illustrator. What do I need to do?

There’s no easy, live way to make text go circular in versions before CS.

Really the AI>PS route is the best way. (if you dont have CS)
