What do you lot reckon are the minimum specs for running Photoshop CS comfortably on a laptop ?

Probably the same minimum specs as any desktop system.

Ok. That’s fantastic. Cheers.

Let’s try again. Would a Dell Inspiron 1150 (Intel Celeron 2.6ghz) with 512mb ram be suitable ?

For small images, yes. For larger images, the processor is more than adequate, but recommend you increase your ram to a gig or two.

You can sign up for a tryout version from Adobe and find out before purchasing.

MAX-out the RAM the machine can accept.

How practicle this is kind of depends on how big your PSD files are.

Look at the disk sizes offered by Dell and see if you can find out the model numbers and pick the fastest one. the comp.sys.laptops usenet group can probably help you here. (this may be too arcane a detail for you to follow up on.)

I’d pick a laptop with a firewire interface (which is either built-in or via a PCMICA card) An expernal firewire disk can act as a PS work disk. (As I understand it, USB2 uses most of the CPU to pass data, FW leaves lots of CPU to do usefull stuff, even though the transfer rate is comparable.)

We havn’t begun to talk about laptop LCD screen color calibration quality. The MACs may be aheard, here.

Apple MAC users are more likely to run Photoshop. If you can get to an Apple store you might find all the models on display. All the MAC laptops I looked at in the store in Manhattan had CS loaded on them. I see no reason why you couldn’t burn one of your images into a CD and bring it in with you, to play with and get a feel for performance.

Can PS use a USB memory stick as a work disk? I believe USB2 would be faster than a hdd. If this works, a nice fat memory stick might help speed things up on a laptop.

Mike

A memory stick is going to make a very slow file system.

An external disk connected via USB2, or FW, can’t be any faster than the disk.

If you’re using a USB/FW connected disk to backup your files, for instance, you really don’t care how much of the CPU is used to transfer the data. If you’re trying to do something while you are backing up, you care.

I’m pretty sure PS is designed to overlap computing with disk I/O. If the CPU is fully occupied by doing disk transfer, there’s nothing left for PS. If someone knows this to be wrong, I’ll shut up.

The Apple folks, IME, use FW external devices to store and run applications all the time. PC folks just use these things for backup.

So it was not worth anything to you to find out. Just so everyone knows what people like you think such info is worth.

Is there some Usenet law that states every newsgroup has pricks like you ? Is it like a care in the community program ?

USB is too slow. Just beef up the memory and you’ll do fine. —
