Want to load some more fonts on my Mac (got hundreds of TTFs), but I understand that it can seriously bog up the computer if I load the lot – this true? Mac G5 2.5… (new to Macs BTW 🙂

The thing is, regardless of whether you are using Mac or PC, the computer will load every font you have installed when it boots up. This means fonts are eating up your RAM. Best thing to do if you want to use more than 100 fonts is buy a font management program like Extensis Suitcase. These programs put the fonts in a separate folder where they won’t be loaded every time you boot up; you open the software only when you need extra fonts and select which ones to temporarily load into RAM.

I don’t know if it works on a Mac the same as on an MS Windows machine but I put all my rarely used fonts in a separate directory. If I need anything other than the basic set, I use a freeware font reviewer to select the one(s) I want for that task and copy them into the live fonts directory, removing them later.

OSX panther includes low end font management app FontBook. It is good enough for "hundreds of fonts". For thousands of fonts pick Suitcase, FontAgent or FontReserve. No perfect font manager for OSX exists yet.
