I have just loaded CS3 and downloaded all updates. When I open a Canon 1Ds raw file in CS3 it is opened as 8bit whereas CS2 correctly opens it as 16bit. I have looked at all the preference settings but can’t find anything which looks like it may correct this problem. Can anyone help?

At the bottom of the RAW dialog there is some blue text, click on it and adjust your preferences there.

I can’t seem top find Raw dialog although Bridge Help seems to refer to a dialog box – where should I look for it?

That’s strange. Normally when you open a RAW file in PS the RAW dialog should open.
Maybe you changed something in your Bridge preferences?
Look under -Edit-Preferences-File Type Associations- make sure Canon Camera Raw is set to open with PS CS3.
Are you sure it’s a RAW file and not a JPG?

I looked up your suggestion in CS3 help rather than bridge help and found the answer – many thanks for your help!

It’s a decent thing to tell others how this was resolved, while bottom posting.

In general "File Associations" is all it needs, but for some reasons or depending on some situation CS3 may not work base on the "File Association". To fix the problem you may have to select the "References" and select CS3 using the "Browse" option.

That’s how I fixed my problem.

Are you asking for more details on the solution to my problem or promoting bottom posting?

Thanks Dave. I am sure I will have further questions in the future and will continue to also post hints to others that fit in with my "expertise". I find this news group, alt.graphics.Photoshop, comp.graphics.algorithms, rec.photo.darkroom, rec.photo.digital and aus.photo to be used by a great bunch of very helpful guys unlike some of the electronics groups I also subscribe to which seem to be largely posted to by ignorant spammers. All the best Malcolm

Could you tell us what you did to fix the problem? It may be of use to others.

Both! It really does help to keep a dialogue "in order" and quote only as little as it puts the quetion/answer/thanks/etc. in context.

his simply pointing out that most probably you’ll have more questions, on other topics.

And I’d be glad to try to help when I can, top or bottom….

Fred proposed the solution
At the bottom of the RAW dialog there is some blue text, click on it and adjust your preferences there.

It took me a while to realise the RAW dialog referred to is the Screen CAMERA RAW 4.1 that opens when you click on a raw thumbnail in Bridge (the screen with the image and RAW adjustment sliders for exposure etc.

At the bottom of this screen in the middle baewen the SAVE IMAGE and OPEN IMAGE buttons is some underlined "blue" text like : Adobe RGB (1998); 16bit; 4064 by 2074 (11.0MP); 240ppi
If you click on this underlined text a Workflow Options window opens which allows these parameters to be set – My CS3 initially had 8Bit per channel set as depth.

My initial confusion with Freds reply was not recognising what Raw Dialog referred to and the underlined text had to be inspected closely to see it was blue (my old eyes)

But still, you prefer to read like we are used to – top to bottom and not from the bottom to the top.

my eyes are 65 years old! My main problem is deterioration in the blood vessels at the back of my eyes caused by diabetes and which have leaked blood (thankfully not massive leaks or I would be blind) into both eyeballs which at its worst was like looking through a star field with clumps of galaxies here and there. The eye surgeons have sealed up the leaks with laser and the spots are very gradually fading. If any of you have diabetes don’t muck about and get it under control.

I had to stop wet darkroom work as I couldn’t see the grain in the scope for focussing and have been digital for the last three and a half years. Anyway I now find that the control I now have with Photoshop way surpasses anything I could do in the wet darkroom. Photoshop CS3 is great and Camera Raw 4.1 is magic. The Photoshop newsgroups have been of great interest and (so far) the problem above in this thread which you guys helped solve has been my only problem

My passion for photography (and all things arty) keeps me going flat out and I say I will never retire!

Malcom,

Great to hear you have been able to overcome your vision problem and is now recovering from your surgery without any post-operative complications. I wish you the best and hope you will get your vision back the way it was before.

Your story is an inspiring one and shows that nothing can move us a away from the things we love in life. Sometimes we have to make "adjustments" but in the end they seem like a good exercise in versatility.

The move to digital is a very exciting one. There are so many tools and possibilities we didn’t have in the dark room it is quite overwhelming at first but also amazingly interesting.

There are many newsgroups on the Internet and not just Usenet groups. There are groups hosted by Yahoo and Google, Adobe’s web site and many other sites. Topics include software (Photoshop and others), computer graphics and Photography (both general and camera-specific).

Good luck with your projects and keep working.
