Layer Style Backwards – Bug?

I’m working on a client’s web images and have tried to create a layer style to add a drop shadow to a flattened canvas. In the thumbnail of the layer styles, the drop shadow appears correctly but it’s backwards when applied to the image. The shadow needs to be 135 degrees which is right and bottom and it appears to the left and bottom when the style is actually applied.

Have I found a new bug?

No, you’ve found out that you haven’t found the lighting angle control yet.

The thumbnail in styles doesn’t depend on the lighting angle set for your document…

nice turn of the phrase, that. 🙂

I’m confused. In the drop shadow properties I set the angle for where the shadow would fall on the image. 135 degrees gives an angle of light as if it were coming from the top left and the shadow would fall to the bottom right. That’s what I saved in the style but it flipped horizontally upon applying to the image.

Can I not save the drop shadow properly as a layer style? I’ve always used actions to add drop shadows and copyrights but I was experimenting with a different method.

You might want to consult your manual for "global lighting angle".

OK, found it. The problem was that I had "use global light" checked when I created the layer style. I recreated the style with global light unchecked and the style applied correctly. Would have worked the same had I changed the global light angle also.
