I have a 17" LCD monitor that I will be using with Photoshop CS. I can’t spend a lot of money on a Spyder right now but would like to find freeware or reasonable software (<$50) for calibrating my monitor. I hear that the Abobe Gamma utility does not work very well with LCD monitors. Any suggestions?

The Spyder is going for less than $100: do yourself a favor. Even with color calibration LCDs can be very difficult to use for predicting print output.
