Unsupported color space

Don’t know why, but a new CD of TIF images (taken by a Nikon D100) won’t open in PS 7.0. Error message sez "unsupported color space." I’ve tried clicking off all color management preferences, but they still won’t open. My photographer says he can do it on his machine, and he gets a pop-up screen that allows him to override the embedded profiles. I don’t.

Someone tell me what to do before I throw the computer out the window.

You probably need the Nikon plug in to convert the images to a format/color space that Photoshop can read.

Ask your photographer.

Does Nikon have that, or Photoshop/Adobe?

Nikon.

It’s probably one of these.

I have a D100 and PS-CS. I haven’t tried TIFF yet but will w/in 24 hrs and report back. Also, isn’t there a PS download available related to color spaces?

Hello, folks. For seemingly no reason whatsoever, suddenly, when I try to launch Photoshop I get the message:

"Could not initialize photoshop because a color was specified using an unsupported color space."

Mind you, I’m not loading an image… this is just at the startup!

Any suggestions would be most appreciated (of course a solution would be REALLY great)

Thanks much!

Run Adobe Gamma from the control panel and create a new monitor profile

This could also be caused by corrupted preferences (or other files).

Hmm. Looks like I may need to reinstall. 🙁

Then again, could be a good time to upgrade to PS8… I mean, PSCS. 😀

But mind you: a preferences file (corrupted or not) is not removed during uninstall.

Delete it seperately. Details in the FAQ.

Thanks! Yeah, I realized that and deleted it, that fixed the problem.

Gregory,

Not that it matters, but what version of Photoshop are you using now? I find it a bit odd that deleting the Preferences file is still needed to clear up so many Photoshop problems. I have several applications that use a preferences file of one sort or another and yet none of them has this need to delete the preferences file to cure odd problems.

I am curious what there is about Photoshop’s preferences file that causes it so commonly to become corrupted.

Burton – we find it odd as well. We’ve bullet proofed the prefs file as much as we can and somehow it still gets corrupted, but more so on Windows.

There is a codepath that would announce that — loading swatches that have a reference to an unknown colorspace (which usually means the swatches are corrupt).

I am trying to open a file that gives me the error message "the TIF files uses an unsupported color space". Other people are opening the image so I am thinking it is me. I am using Photoshop 7.0. Will this be fixed if I upgrade? Is there any work around I can use in the meantime?

Is the file in 16-bit mode by any chance?

Where did that TIFF file come from?

It may be corrupt, or it may be some oddball thing that Photoshop really can’t read (which is what the message says).

For a workaround, open the file in irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com, free) and save it unchanged. If it’s still un-openable, see if you can change the color space of the image within irfanview.
