Need to get some professional advice on the purchase of a laster printer for our workplace. We are currently looking for a laser printer to be able to handle the following:

– 13 x 19 Super B paper printing (1-sided).
-PostScript ready for use with CorelDraw 10 and Adobe Photoshop 7 running on a Windows XP O/S.
– Highest resolution possible as these will be going to camera for shooting negatives from, prefer minimum of 600 x 600 dpi.
– Capable of doing Letter, Legal and Tabloid printing as well as Super B. – Would GREATLY prefer a colour laser at this time as we are trying to rid ourselves of the inkjet printer we currently use.

The colour is not so much an issue here, but obviously we do print in colour from time to time for proofing purposes as well as for making some posters and individual fliers. Our ideal colour would be able to print on 13×19 but typically we only go as large as 12×18 printing in colour. But for making b/w prints we do use and require 13×19 paper for some of our larger print jobs.

For colour we do NOT want to go back to inkjets if at all possible as we know that inkjets will not produce the proper screens and halftones we need in b/w mode. Only a quality laser printer can accomplish this. Hence the reason we are looking for something that can do both. So far I’m running into a brick wall and not finding anything that seems to be able to handle the 12×18 or 13×19 printing. I guess lasers can only do 11×17? Not sure why, though.

So what do you all use out there? I’m sure not everyone is using inkjets for colour work and I can’t believe that no one prints over 11×17 in colour. So I need some recommendations from graphics professionals.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

It sounds like you would benefit from talking to a rep from Xerox or one of the printing trade dealers.

Most laser printers I have encountered are set up for general office work, which means 81/2 x 11 paper as standard.

There are office type photocopiers with interfaces to drive them as printers but these are many thousands of dollars to buy.

I question your comment on the inkjet printers since the one I bought recently claims 4800 x 2400 dpi resolution compared with 600 dpi for my laser printer.

best of luck.

We have a Canon CLC1180 laser color copier with a Fiery rip connected to our network that handles 12×18 thru the by-pass. You can get full 11×17 bleeds, but that’s about it. If you do go this route plan on leasing and getting a maintenance contract. Color laser copiers do a very good job, but need routine maintenance. Maybe see if newer Canon models, or models from Xerox handle larger paper sizes. I believe the max resolution is 400dpi color, 600dpi B/W. If you plan on printing at higher resolution at the sizes your talking about, plan on getting the fastest rip, and spending some money. Minolta would be another brand to look into for black and white.

Maybe look into printing direct to plate, and skip the negs if you really need 600dpi?

Good Luck,
