Hey, all…

Not sure how many of you are interested in / able to fire up a YouTube vid – but I found the cloud effects in this video really amazing. I’m sure Photoshop could be used for something similar, and I’ve seen a few tutorials, but nothing that involved this much use of color.

Anyone out there know of some published techniques I might use to get effects like this??

Here’s the vid…

It looks to me that the easiest way to do it would be to create layers of different cloud shots (just the clouds, no sky), change the color in each to the one desired and adjust the opacity on each layer until you get the desired effect. Find a couple of nice blues for your sky and create a vertical gradient with the lighter of the two on the bottom. Move your sky layer under all of your clouds layers. Voila.

The way to do this, or at least the way I do it, is
open your blue sky photo and see what is the size
open your cloud photo and make the size the same
back to your open sky pic and select the sky
back to the clouds, select, copy & close
in the blue sky photo, do a ‘paste into’
Now you can move the clouds where you want it.

1 & 3 can of course being done even before
opening the clouds photo.

Alternatively, search for cloud brushes
example ‘Cloud Brushes by Blazter [JavierZhX]’

I use both (nearly daily) and sometimes takes photos
of clouds specific for this.

You mean the wildly fake looking ones. Shouldn’t be hard with a good brush and a few colors.

last night when I was playing Unreal Tournament I realized the skies in that vid are awfully similar to the ones in my game maps
maybe they are stock stuff from a 3d modeling program??

Photograph them whenever you get a nice looking formation. I have a folder full of nothing but clouds.
I insert them whenever needed.
