Steep learning curve, it has some 500 commands available but it’s awesome in its graphic power for both raster and vector work. there are literally hundreds of books, videos and tutorials available, try putting ‘photoshop tutorial’ into google.

Yes I discovered there were plenty of books out there, that makes it more of a problem in as much as which one to pick! I know it’s probably hard if you’ve been using photoshop for ages to suggest a particulalr author – the Scott Kelby book looks good and has good write-ups on Amazon, but then again quite a few have good write-ups!

Personaly I think Adobe are very greedy in this are as I feel students should be able to buy just the photoshop cs educational version without having to buy the whole suite as many people will just never use the rest of the products but that maketing. The result is they drive people to download warez versions

Adobe and Microsoft are alike, they want to tie you into their products. As well as being a part-time student I work for the National Health Service which is the third largest employer in the world (apparently!). Microsoft have just had a special offer for staff of MS Office Professional for a grand total of

If you aim to be graphics/prepress pro there is no substitute for Photoshop. Well, PhotoRetouch Pro is pretty good I hear.

If you do not aim that high and you don’t need CMYK Photoshop Elements 3 should be good enough and interface is similar to full Photoshop. I don’t know if it has channel mixer though. -F

Scott Kelby books are, at the very least, excruciating to read if you’re English. 🙂

I am in the UK and Photoshop over here is about £490 ($880) as a part time student I am able to get Adobe products at a cut price (amazingly so!) unfortunately I can’t just buy Photoshop CS, the only way I can get it is buying the whole Adobe Creative suite premium + but instead of a massive £1000 ($1700) it is just £399 which also includes a Wacom Graphire 3 if I order by the end of the month. I’m sure you’re all shouting buy, buy, buy at your computers but £399 is still a lot of money!! I currently use Digital Image suite which I find limiting. I am particularly interested in Channels as I would like to get better results in B&W. I know Photoshop is considered the best, but my question is – is it easy to learn? Hi Angela,

No, it isn’t easy, but nothing worth learning is 🙂

There are some good books around for learners:

The Adobe Classroom series is good, but a bit boring. Much more interesting is Photoshop Artistry by Haynes and Crumpler. A good book for photographers is Adobe Photoshop for Photographers by Martin Evening. Later there are more complex books such as Professional Photoshop by Dan Margulis and Real World Color Management by Fraser et al.

One think you ought to note, btw. Unlike the US if you buy the Educational version in the UK it does NOT allow you to upgrade when a new version comes out.

A better solution would be to look for business clearance sales where you can buy an older copy or use eBay. Make sure you use the UK version of eBay if you do and do *NOT* buy anything from someone not residing in the UK.

Incidentally, it appears that in the UK your are no ;longer able to buy Photoshop separately at all. Go to a retailer like Dabs and they only have the Suite. Only Elements can be purchased separately.

But something else, Angela, if you are going to spend hard earned money on CS, you must be willing to spend the biggest portion of your PC time on CS. Adobe Photoshop is the kind of arogant program that insist on time with you. I do not want to be left in out the dark and expected to be ready for action when you feel like it. If you intend to spend time with it, it will show its appreciation.
