Some of my pics are coming up with the Layers locked.
In the layer menu, the layer option is greyed out & I can’t unlock anything. How do I overcome that please?
I am using Photoshop 7 on Windows 98SE.
Thanks
Mac

If the layer says "background" just double click on it to "make a layer." If it is not the background layer, just select the layer and unlock it by deselecting the type of lock at the top of the layers palette.

One more thing. If the layer says "index" then you need to change the color mode before the layer will unlock.

Can you copy the layer by dragging it to the New Layer Icon or selecting all and copying into a brand new file and then seeing if it is still locked?

Yes I have done that & it is still locked.

Previously The problem did not exist, I must have accidentally made some change in the settings.

Dump your prefs by pressing Alt+Control+Shift or Option+Command+Shift on a Mac when
rebooting Photoshop. It will restore the default settings. You will have to reset it the way you want, but it should fix the problem. Once you configure the preferences, you can copy the prefs file and stick it somewhere safe. Then when things like this happen again, you can just copy and paste over the corrupt one.

In your layers palette, above the layers, which "lock" is engaged? Clicking on this lock should unlock it.

Also, what color mode are you in? Image > Mode > ? The "partially locked" layer isn’t linked to another layer, like the background, is it?

You didn’t happen to accidently click on the "lock image pixels" icon (second from the left just above the top layer where it says lock) did you. I may be off base but it is the only thing I can see you didn’t cover yet.

What type of file are you saving it as, a PSD I hope. Have you tried adding a layer below the main layer, maybe filled with white or something and then seeing if it still comes up as partially locked? Another possible solution would be to dump your preferences manually by navigating to the Prefs file in Adobe Photoshop under program files. Just select it and delete it.
