An issue with the browser

I keep my files on a file server elsewhere on the network. Some of the images are quite huge, and many of the directories contain dozens if not hundreds of images.

The problem is that when I use the browser in CS to browse the directories, sometimes I have to wait forever for it to finish doing whatever it does (read the metadata and refresh the thumbnails?) before I can do ANYTHING else. This gets quite frustrating when all I want to do is move on to the next directory or open an image!

I’ve tried anything I can think of to stop it, but nothing I do works. Is there anything I can do about this?

Thanks.

I know what you mean CB

If PSCS has any serious contenders it will be on file browsing and pace of workflow issues IMHO

Have you tried the following workaround?

1 – use File -> Open to get the image(s) you want to work on

2 – before going for a coffee save and close all images in PSCS then open the File Browser

It isn’t a huge solution but getting the browser to update when you are away from the machine seems almost calming

I’ve got another angle which might prove effective.

In my estimation, this could be looked at as a file management issue. Assuming you have huge amounts of data in one folder, start a filing system. You need a few more folders then group your images into the new folders. If you reduce the number of files your browser has to process, it should speed things up.

Your filing system should have a scheme such as file dates for example or alphabetical by filename and so on, otherwise you will have to search each folder which won’t save you too mush time. Ideally each folder will have about the same amount of data or alternatively keep a few of the works in progress in a low volume folder.

Hope that helps.

Yes. Buy a proper image database/browser. 🙂 PS may be the best image editor but the file browser is clunky and slow. You’d find things were much faster with the networked version of ThumbsPlus.
