Font Preview?

This has got to be a mental block, but in searching some 10 PS CS books, including the manaul and google, I cannot find how to preview a font without selecting it and typing a sample in the image.

I’ve tried selecting sample text in the image and clicking on the font menu. True enough, the selected font is highlighted and if I *select* another font, the selected text in the image is displayed in that new font. However, stepping through the font list with the up/down arrow keys does not change the text display until I actually click on a font to select it. And that collapses the font menu so you have to start all over..

It’s got to be better than this!

Thanks! . . . . patrick

Type the text you want, select it with your cursor or double click on the large "T" in the type layer, and then place your cursor in the font field and use your up/down arrow keys on your keyboard to scroll through them. This works with any field–sizes, opacity, scale, rotate, bevels, etc.

You say that your fonts don’t display when you do this? Try dumping your prefs by holding Alt+Control+Shift or Option+Command+Shift on a Mac when rebooting Photoshop.

Terrific, Peadge! I did dump my preferences (sob!) and followed your suggestions step-by-step and all worked like a charm.
I also experimented with other fields in the Options Bar and other tools. Sure enough, they all worked as described.

I was embarrassed to ask what had to be a simple procedure but I’ll be hanged if I could find it in any reference. That’s strange as it is surely one of the most needed function in text manipulation.
Thanks for relieving a nagging frustration.!

I wish font names would display in the actual font like in MS Word.

An idea on your preferences: set them the way you like and copy the Prefs file and paste it into a distant folder, like My Documents or something. Then when you have a problem where dumping the prefs might be prudent, you can copy and paste instead and not lose anything.

Select the type so it’s highlighted and click in the slot in Fonts or the Character Palette and you will be able to scroll through with the arrow keys and see a preview. Go to View>Extras and uncheck it to get rid of the highlight color. Takes a little practice but not hard once you get it.

Thanks! Pleadge also pointed out the procedure. The added suggestion of turning off the Extras is a nice touch.

(Don’t forget you have a hidden selection now)
