A friend and I are trying to find a simple way for people viewing our photo site to be able to get back to the index page without it showing up in one of the frames. I put the "back to home" link on the thumbnail side and the new page just shows up in that narrow area, and the same with the main photo page on the right. I cannot seem to bypass the whole frame thing and get the view back to the index. Ideas??

You’re targeting the wrong frame. Personally, I would get rid of frames completely. They’re a PITA.

Indeed, assuming the OP named the frames properly. The link to the index page should go something like –

<A HREF="index.htm" TARGET="_top"

and a link to a certain frame –

<A HREF="somelink.htm"
TARGET="the-nameof-the-frame-specified-in-the-frameset-page "

(note the underscore is needed for the top attribute but not for a pre-named frame)

Have a look at –

This is one of the problem with frames. But if you add a target to the link back to home (target="_parent" I believe) this will instruct the browser to go back to the home page rather than just the frame.

Without being able to see your site I can’t tell how much effort you’ve already put in, have a look at this page it may help.
