Normally, when I choose ‘Save As …’ I have the choice to save my psd or tiff files as a jpeg file but today I’ve found a tiff file that does not give me that choice. I changed it to a psd file and still no jpeg choice, so I’ve used the ‘Save for Web ..’ choice. But I’m just puzzled, why do you sometimes not have the jpeg choice in the ‘Save As ..’ option for a tiff or psd file?

Because you’re not working in 8 bit. Go to Image>Mode and check if you’re in 16 bit.

Nope, I’m afraid they are 8 bit. Indexed colour at 8 bit. And I’ve checked again and there’s deffinitely no jpeg choice. I’ve got 13 to convert to jpeg and it takes quite a bit longer doing it by the ‘Save to Web’ method.

They’re maps, at about 15MB. Perhaps they were not originally tiffs but something like dfx files? Perhaps that’s got something to do with it.

Hello, as JPEG does not support indexed colours, you’ll need to convert them to RGB.

You could have received your answer immediately: it is stated in the Photoshop7 user guide, P369 : "…you can use the Save As command to save CYMK, RGB and greyscale images in JPEG format…"

Excellent, thank you.

Pierre, it’s page 456 in my version. I’ve spent so much time in the past looking up things in the User Guide and not finding them that I’ve got into the habit of using that as a last restort. I’ll try to get out of that habit.
