I was inspired to do it, because in response to a fairly gross question (could you give me a list of tutorial-sites), one man actually GAVE it (which I thank him wholeheartedly for). And then the OP said nothing more than "Thanks" .
So (seriously) Thanks a lot Billy. It’s a great list! and maybe some time in future I’m gonna make some reviews, and selections.
Carlo
Nobody picked it up you said?
Maybe people are sharper than what you think.
Billy simply copied Ronviers post ‘Photoshop School 8/15/2007’ word for word and nobody thanked Ron therefore.
I also did not miss Katherine’s suggestion that I invite you for lunch, but maybe you’ll walk off with my cutlery:-)

No, you may not ask, because it is a stupid question.
I answered myself on that the moment I wrote it.

I think this kind of answers is in the same level as the question made.
Using newsgroups will be nice if all of us remember the newbies a gold rule: READ THE FAQ before posting.
This groups has a large one, but seems to be lost in the Net hyperspace. Anybody knows where it is?
Using Google is not a genetic known way to find information. Some examples will be nice to newcomers.
In the other hand, a "Thanks" response to huge list offered by Billy is not the kind one could expect. And I don’t wanna know if the Photoshop copy is a PIRATE COPY or a LEGAL COPY. This could be another huge thread to explore.
Perhaps the matter is not this groups, is all groups issue. People don’t know how to use newsgroups, email, web, or Internet at all. People thinks the Net has all the answers, despite the individuals behind it, who really has the answers…

Amazingly astute observation.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to compile a list of URL’s for a person who is either too lazy or unwilling to do even a smidgen of research on their own.

Yes. But seems that this is not the right answer anyone wanna read or hear about. Anycase, I’ll lurk into my old archives to redeem this FAQ seen several months ago (perhaps years!). I’m sure is a project (cancelled?) that worth the effort to maintain updated info available, to newcomers and old ones.
Because I can find more than what I need by reading old answers, and they are often more than I need.
Sure. I read several groups and don’t post so much. Answers come from proof readings in 99% of cases… 😀

Yeah, but is not "the answer" to any question posted in a specific interest group. If it was, why do we need a group? This is the point. If some asks about Level correction issues, I don’t throw a simple "go to Google". I will address to specific sites, books, references, tutorials or answers. IMHO adressing people to Google for all is a waste of time for group members. Or… perhaps the only subjects to speak about here are the ultra-high-level one, guru-ones or so? I don’t think so. There is a large amount of themes to talk about between the simple "How to make a transparent GIF" and "how to correct a CMYK issue", por example.

I agree on that, but by the same reason, I prefer no message at all … isn’t? The Google-is-the-answer replies are too easy to do and too wastefull for either the lazy person that ask for the
easy-way-info-grabbing and the rest of us. Waste of time for all. As this reply, of course. But…. this is a free media to expres us! (I think….) 🙂

*If* you just monitor this or any newsgroup for 1-2 months then you will see that most questions are same or similar to what others asked miniutes/hours/days or weeks/months ago.
or even years. So, I always try to GOOGLE for the specific answer, and reading Usenet to keep up with what’s going on (cuz I don’t have time to surf the net). And by the time I Googled for some minutes I often learn extra information.
answering the very same questions been asked thousands of times, we can use this valuable time to learn something new.
– Why do we need this group? to get information/answer of course
– Where to get answer? whererever we can find better/faster available answer
– Do we need to repeat the same old questions/answers daily? of course we don’t but sadly we have the same issue to deal with. Or most same question often being asked every few days, and the same thread often last for days/week.
I think everyone if not most prople give you the honor to serve who refuses to be friend with Ms Google <bg>
And if you can give a better answer than Ms Google can, then my hat is off to you <bg>. Me?
– I try to help myself as much as I can, and only ask when I run out of source
– And because I know Google has 99-101% of answer waiting for me to learn, so I always Google first before asking for help. And it’s so sad that I always find answer from Google to have the chance to ask and hope to find the answer from newsgroup. And Google is my answer and I don’t think it’s wrong to share the goodie to friend, not?

Sure you do that, but many people don’t know how to use
Google, neither the Net at all. This is not the point. I do Google searchs every minute I need info. But in a newsgroup I wanna find answers, no new ways to search…. Too easy to kick out the ball….

OF COURSE! A FAQ is a must, do you agree?
– Why do we need this group? to get information/answer of course
Yes. Not for forwarding and be forwarded to another service as Google. Not in the way have seen. If you forward some to Google, it seems IMHO that you don’t wanna waste your time (no matter, is your choice) answering a frequently asked question. Ok. I think it will be more useful to all to point to a FAQ, or be quit at all.
– Where to get answer? whererever we can find better/faster available answer
Oh yes. But you are a rich resources person (me too, IMHO) but not all the people in this and others groups are. 😀
– Do we need to repeat the same old questions/answers daily? of course we don’t but sadly we have the same issue to deal with. Or most same question often being asked every few days, and the same thread often last for days/week.
Nope. A FAQ is a must. I prefer to redirect people to a FAQ than Google. Perhaps these people learn some more interesting things, and perhaps the FAQ must include some guidelines about Google, why not…

No. I use Google everyday, 10 hours at day wired to the Net. But when I enter here, I don’t wanna Google redirections. It’s only that.
And if you can give a better answer than Ms Google can, then my hat is off to you <bg>. Me?
Sometimes this is Ok. Using PS from 2.5 PC version has a value, IMHO. Thus, I’m here to help others, to help myself with new info, and so on.
– I try to help myself as much as I can, and only ask when I run out of source
Correct. This is the right way.
– And because I know Google has 99-101% of answer waiting for me to learn, so I always Google first before asking for help. NOOOO! Share Google is not wrong. But answer all the questions with a "http://www.google.com" line is the fine way to do things in a newsgroup? THIS IS MY POINT! Google is a great aid, of course!!! I don’t said isn’t it. But, despite taht, beware. The mastering of information research is to find the PEOPLE that has the answers… and I think newsgroups is a great way to do that.
…and have you repeated the same answers for all those years? or you just ignore most of the questions, and may repeat the same answer when you haven’t seen the same question being asked for weeks or so?
… and they always can learn just like they learn to use Usenet, can’t they?
And I don’t see you are giving answer to all questions (or I am totally blinded?). And yes I do realize what the newsgroup is and that’s the reason
why I spare my extra time to monitor the newsgroup to learn new thing, and may be able to help other with few thing I may know. But I ain;t gonna be a broken record player to play the same cracking-noise.
OF COURSE! A FAQ is a must, do you agree?
They won’t read, and too many stinky FAQs out there. Yes, I do read lot of FAQs (not just Usenet), and for Usenet alone I have seen about 2 (TWO) great FAQs with very general with very deep information.
1. I suggest them to Google for the answer
2. While you provide them with raw answer.
See, if you just do your job then everything would work out fine, or people wouldn’t care to Google when they already get the answer from you, would they?
– Where to get answer? whererever we can find better/faster available answer
But you and I can’t write a BOOK to some simple question like "how to mask", "how to blend" etc.. when I know dozens way of masking (and very good at it) and probably 101 ways of blending (not very good at it), and no way I can pass some detailed information to a simple question.
specific version then there should be a note. Else all my experiences with older versions would be a big waste <bg>
– Do we need to repeat the same old questions/answers daily? of course we don’t but sadly we have the same issue to deal with. Or most same question often being asked every few days, and the same thread often last for days/week.
I know there are at least 2 great FAQs about Usenet, and you may be able to GOOGLE for them (but probably pretty hard to spot those two specific FAQs), and there may be many other good FAQs but I didn’t read to know for sure.
– ..before asking for very specific answer (if I can’t Google out), but the chance that I should find more answer than I really need. So, I save the already answered for other good question so many others will benefit from some good *newer* answer.Good practice. I share this with you. But not ALL PEOPLE are using the Net, neither computers in the same way… luckily… XD
Newsgroups for me are a way of learning new things in the areas that I am interested in.
I don’t always have a question to ask, but I still check the postings every day. Always wanting to learn new things from others too.
Katherine (just my $AUD 1.00’s worth 🙂 (inflation).
I think everyone if not most prople give you the honor to serve who refuses to be friend with Ms Google <bg>
Hmmm if you already Googled yourself with mass knowledge, then I don’t see any good reason you would Google for more. Unless you want your brain brusted out <bg>
And if you can give a better answer than Ms Google can, then my hat is off to you <bg>. Me?
Helping other is my way of helping myself, but no way I want to help someone who refuse to learn.
forum may have more chance but not Usenet). No, I don’t mean to put down Usenet, but it’s the way thing works.
– Web forum is much smaller than Usenet, so there is more chance that more people will read and join in.
– Usenet is way too big, many people have the answer but a big chance that they don’t read the question, no interest of giving the answer.. and the weakest point of Usenet that the old message often won’t be seen again.
like I said, nobody is going to stop you helping other, and many (I do) will
