What settings are you using? Is the problem with images with transparency or with all images?

Try increasing the number of colors you include when saving – that will give you smoother edges. For more complex images, I usually save as gif 128 no dither. For text, experiment with the anti-aliasing settings for text (strong for larger text to crisp for smaller text).

I use the max colors available, and I have even tried bluring the edges with the blur tool before saving but the gif just discards the smooth edges i have made. Its fine when i save it as PNG-24 or high quality jpeg but I guess that is the problem with gifs, is that they is not enough colors on the pallette available to make the antialiased edges. It would come out fine if I put it on a matte of the background color of my site, but I’m trying to avoid that. Any suggestions? by the way my settings are for the gif:
color reduction: selective, lossy: 0, colors: 256, dither: 100%, tranparency: yes, matte: none, no transparency dither, interlaced: no, web snap: 0%
Hope that helps

Transparency makes it a horse of a different color :-). The only way I’ve found to get perfectly antialiased edges with transparency is a little complicated but doable:
1. save as gif without transparency – save on a background color (or
matte)
that is the same color as the dominant color in your background.
2. open up the gif – change to rgb – select the background color with the
magic wand set to 1 and then delete your selection. Save again as gif. You’ll have nicely antialiased edges.

Personally, I only do this when I really need to (overlapping images, patterned background, etc.) – otherwise I save with background color – doesn’t add much to file size.

By the way, most of the time I’ve found diffusion dither to be the best
for
the web – and most of the time no dither is the best for sharp images (try 88% if you really need dither).
