I have Photoshop CS on a Toshiba P25-S507 (wide screen) laptop with 512MB RAM and a 60GB 7200 RPM drive. The system is running Windows XP SP1 with all latest Windows Update patches.

Randomly Photoshop CS will crash/close the Photoshop window, even with NO IMAGE OPEN, just the application active on my desktop, I can leave it open and after some random period of time the application just disappears, poof, gone. On VERY rare occasions I have got a popup indicating that a "Serious Error has occured" and that Photoshop CS needs to close, however, the most common situation is that the Photoshop window just closes with no popup at all.

I have also had the Photoshop window close when trying to print, anywhere from trying to build the print image to send to the printer, to the file actually starting to spool to the printer, to crashing as soon as Photoshop returns control after the print job completes. If the application crashes in the middle of spooling the job the print is spoiled as the file is not totally sent to the printer.

On SOME crashes an entry is written into the Application Event Log with text similar to the following:

Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 8.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x04b31548.

This is followed by another event with text such as this:

Fault bucket 99266380.

At this point I have completly rebuilt my system from brand new distribution media (the latest CD with SP1 integrated). I tried running the application prior to ANY other patches (other than the integrated SP1) and had the same crash/window close problem. In order to use my laptop on my corporate network I MUST have all latest patches applied so I have since added all patches with no change, Photoshop CS still randomly crashes/closes/

It should also be noted that NO OTHER application is doing this, I can boot the system and launch Outlook, Outlook Express, IE, Phase One CaptureOne DSLR, etc. and leave them open for days with no faults.

I am out of ideas here, if this is a hardware problem I would like to know what Photoshop is using that none of my other applications use that causes Photoshop to fail. It should be noted that CaptureOne DSLR is a very extensive application and has never exhibted this failure.

While typing this entry I had Photoshop open in the background with NO images open, just the application running. I just got the popup that Adobe Photoshop CS has encountered a problem and needs to close. The contents of the data that will be sent to Microsoft is:

AppName: photoshop.exe AppVer: 8.0.0.0 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 17111548

The Code is for an access-violation (0xC0000005)Flags: all zero

I have pulled up the Microsoft Support site based on the Application Event log link and no known problem is being found by Microsoft with respect to the OS.

The most common cause for exits like that is bad drivers.

Normally Photoshop would catch all other errors and display an error dialog instead of just disappearing.

Yes, the crash/close when printing sounds like a bug in the printer driver.

I don’t know that but I happened to find a great tutorial cd that will help you in this matter. http://www.siliconlogics.com/photoshop.htm

Mine just recently started doing this when I was opening a file from a CD. Is this a driver issue also?

KelliA – it could be, and the fact that is only happens when opening from a CD makes it sound like a CD driver problem.

"Unable to continue because of a hard ware or system error, sorry btu this error is unrecoverable"…

any one ever get that, its the first time i see that error, never in 3 years have i seen it. On my laptop PS7 was running fine till i installed those programs………those PS7 and CS and any compatability problems with these programs?

It could be a corrupt font, corrupt color profile, or a corrupt install.

I’ve had a similiar problem with my PS7. It will install successfully, and then when i click on the program to run it.. it will go through the loading stage then just dissappear. Now the previous day it was working fine. I don’t know what happened, the only thing that i did after using photoshop last night was reinstall my audio driver because the sounds and audio files on my computer were running a little faster than normal, increasing the pitch in, for example, the vocals on an mp3 track. Although as soon as i got that fixed and having installed a few windows updates, the following morning i have this problem with adobe. But adobe image ready would work fine and adobe streamline would work fine as well as adobe InDesign. So i have not the slightest idea as to what the problem could be. Ant help would be much appreciated.
