Hi there!

I’ve got a question concerning a foto conversion. I’d like to reduce a foto of a persons face to a two color picture where the contours are still available.

Here is an example what I mean: http://www.sachsenleipzig.de/images/che.gif

Is there an "automatic" way to do this with filters, actions … or can someone please describe the steps which lead to this result?

Thx, Mac

You can use Indexed color image mode.
Set number of colors to 2.

Try the following (given you start with a rgb or cmyk image)
1. desaturate
2. add some gaussian blur for reduced detail, this will not influence the sharpness of the final result. Maybe you will have to go through some trial and error cycles to find the best setting for the radius
3. posterize using the "threshold" command, which allows you to
fine-tune the distribution of light and dark areas
4. if required, do a cleanup with the brush
5. create a new layer and set the layer mode to mulitply
7. fill this layer with your desired background color
8. merge down

BTW, de.comp.graphik still exists 😉
