Programs: Front Page 2002, Photoshop CS, XP 2003 Office Professional OS: XP Home

Photoshop 7.0 runs fine w/ above programs/OS.

Photoshop CS shows following problems:
1) Front Page 2002 won’t recognize anything processed from CS when I attempt to locate and insert a picture into FP 2002 web page. File doesn’t show up in appropriate folder in FP 2002 although it’s there. If I type in file name, get a message in FP 2002 that file is unsupported format even though regular Jpeg.
2) With CS installed, when I try to do above operation get a message in FP 2002 that memory is low and not enough resources to support operation. This is untrue.

Anything here I need to do?

Thanks, Stuart

The easiest thing to do is separate the two programs. Create all your web images (using Save For Web) and save them in a folder. Then open FrontPage and add your pictures either using "insert" which I never use, or drag and drop from either Windows Explorer or a thumbnail viewing program like ACDSee the way I do it. There’s no reason to run both programs at the same time.

Are you working live or a local copy of your web? You might be working live and saving it in a local copy without realizing it.

Larry: many thanks for quick reply.

1) I save my images in a Photos file in Multimedia folder. Never save directly into FP 2002 images folder. Then I insert from Photos file.
2) What’s difference, pardon ignorance, of working live or local copy of web?

Drag and dropping into place is much more intuitive than using the insert menu. Especially from a thumbnail viewing program like ACDSee so you can see which picture you are inserting.

FrontPage is the only web design program that allows you to work live on the server if it has FrontPage extensions installed. File>Open Web and put in the full URL to the web site and you will be prompted for the username and password will allow you to actually open the web on the server. Then any changes you make will be seen by the entire world. That’s how I update most of my web sites. I can have a client on the phone and make changes that they can see immediately.

If you’re having trouble with FrontPage, there’s an excellent forum on Yahoo groups: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FPlist/>

Larry: am not working live then. Publish to internet after I make corrections. None of these problems ever occurred with PS 7.0.

I don’t understand the problem. How are you preparing the images? Are you using Save For Web? I have Photoshop CS and 7.01 and three versions of FrontPage on both my computers and have never had a problem with images in FrontPage. If I’m going to help, you need to send me your exact work flow.

Larry: thanks again for continued help.
Using PS 7.0 and FP 2002 :

1) in PS 7.0 I save the image in SAVE AS. Save as jpeg into Photos file in Multimedia folder.
2) in FP2002 I work on the web page (not live) and insert Image from image icon in toolbar. Never a problem.
See:
website: www.lostworldsinc.com

3) In CS when I attempt same flow, aforementioned problems occur:
a) When I hit image icon from FP2002 toolbar immediately get an error message as Photos file opens for image selection. Not enough memory to complete operation, etc.
b) From FP2002 workpage can’t find any saved image in Photos file generated from CS. The 7.0 generated images are all there.

The proper work flow in all versions of Photoshop since 5.5 is after resizing the image and adding sufficient unsharp mask to restore sharpness that was reduced by resizing, use File>Save For Web to create your compressed Jpeg. That allows you to see the original and compressed Jpeg in a side by side window to see how much compression the image can take and still look good. When saving, specify which folder you want it to save in. I usually use a quality level of 35 to 40 as a Progressive Jpeg. Using Save As Jpeg to create a compressed image for the web is like using a hammer to compress it. You have no controll over minor changes in compression, 12 choices compared to 100.

Try that with one of your originals and see if it makes a difference.

LARRY: thanks so much. Just Saved To Web instead of Save As and FP2002 is working fine now. Overjoyed. Hope no other glitches.

Terrific support for terrific product.
