I recently installed CS2. Previously, with photoshop, the icons for images, (.jpg, .gif , .psd) would be little thumbnails of the images. . . little icon sized pictures of the images themselves. Now, the icons are icons; some kind of orange pot thingy (or something) for jpg, a feather quill for psd, and multi-colored shapes (circle, square, triangle) for .gif. It seems to me that I, at one time, figured out how to change the icons to little images, but I can’t remember how I did it
Does anyone know?

Hi Group,
I’m curious to know if there is a way in Vista to display thumbnails for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign files so that I can see the actual content rather than just the generic icon. It works for me with Acrobat files but not the others. Ideas would be appreciated.
Bob

Re: I guess that it takes know ing the right questions…

no it takes recognizing you have had the answer for days now and DOING IT

in the off chance you are not Bob who just refuses to try the only correct answer
and then whine about having no solution and difficulty, I apologize for the mistaken identity
and
I quote my orig answer:::::

google for psicon.dll

since PS CS this feature has been removed for Windows users (forcing you to use the hideous file browser from PS)

I do not have Vista
In XP I have used on 2 computers a successful hack
google for psicon.dll

there is a download of two files you add to registry

since then I have thumbnails of all PS and Illy files in Windows Explorer and do not need to wait half hour to see my files in PS browser

No, I’m not Bob. (What about bob?) I am sombody completely different. I have only posted to this group 2 times in my entire life. I have been using Photoshop since version 3.5… Since version 4, (I believe) The icons for photoshop have, until recently, been smaller than thumbnail, thumbnails… even on the desk top.
as far as needing to find my files by picture or whatever in Explorer or Bridge I don’t have the need. I, pretty much, keep my files in related folders. and I always name my files with… Oh hell! who am I kidding? The photoshop I remember saved the files with a thumbnail icon… on the desktop, in the folder, on a cd, anywhere! I DID a search for psicon.dll That’s one (1) file. not two I placed the dll in the photoshop directory. I don’t know how to add the dll and whatever to the registry. I am not a computer programmer or whatever, I am a commercial artist. I have always been able to see thumbs in thumbnail view. So, you are not answering the question I asked. I just want to be able to glance at my desktop and see the file that I’m working on without too much trouble. As far as…

If there are 2 files to download and one of them is psicon.dll, then what is the other files name? And… How do I add the file(s) to the REGISTRY? And… will this solve the problem I have,

Well, Photoshop simply no longer offers that for Windows. It is offical. See:

OS-X users still have the feature but courtesy of the OS, not Photoshop.

James:

Please send me an email (see my address in the post), and I will send you exactly what you need. It is straightforward.

CAVEAT: If you use Illustrator, then it might get complicated because I think Illustrator intentionally reset things so that thumbnails no longer show. I have yet to prove this, but can try it when I get back to the lab after Christmas.

Hang in there. Write me.

Ms. Katwoman,

I did what the directions said. Upon doubleclicking the psicon.dll, it just gave me an
"open with" dialogue. I may have come to the end of this quest. I’m thinking of just uninstalling
CS2 and reinstalling version 7. Other than a few tricks CS2 really isn’t any more of a program
than version 7. I say this now, I don’t know what "Cs2" habits that I have obtained. They tried
to force me to use the stinkin’ Bridge . . . but I haven’t done it. I pretty much don’t need it.
I’m thinking of maybe just installing version 7 along with Cs2 and working with version 7 just to see
what kind of habits I have picked up since I started using it about a year ago…

James, I just tried the instructions and they worked for me. Perhaps some clarification is needed.

It’s not the psicon.dll file that you need to double-click on, it’s the psicon.dll.REG file (the REGistry file) which was also included in the download.

As the instructions said:
——————————————-
Place the following files in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell psicon.dll
aiicon.dll
Run the two REGISTRY files.
——————————————-

So, after placing the necessary DLL file(s) in the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell folder, you go back to the folder into which you originally unzipped them, and double-click the psicon.dll.reg file. (It doesn’t matter if it’s not in the same folder as the DLL file – it can be run from anywhere)

If the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell folder doesn’t exist, as it didn’t on my system, you can create the folder before double- clicking the REG file.

I guess from the stuff below that you, for whatever reason, still think that I am bob. I don’t care.
But, finally, with a little help from "Sundance Kid" I was able to see .psds in folders in thumbhail view. BUT!, That’s not the question I asked. I was as specific as I could be. and here you are calling the kettle black. Your answer was to a question someone else asked. As far as I can see, it is rhe person who wrote the stuff below that is sarcastic and short tempered. Furthermore, It is very much like a student who has to wait for winter break to be over so he/she can get back to the lab after winter break, saying; Me! Pick ME! I know something! me… PICK MEEEEEEEEEE! To quote Kermit: "Frankly, Miss Piggy, I don’t give a hoot!

<SNIP PREVIOUS>
As I said in a previous post, I guess it takes understanding the question to be able to answer the question.
Sundance explained the 2nd file. . . I did get the .Psd icons to show up, in the folder in thumbnail mode.
But that wasn’t my goal. Before I went to CS2 from version 7 the icons themselves on the desktop, in the folder,
on a CD, anywhere that they were, were little photographic images (Smaller than thumbnails). .psds. jpegs, .gifs and probably
many other formats. As it turns out, this doesn’t happen anymore. As in so many other features that Adobe has let go by
the wayside, in their drive to make Photoshop a program for the masses, It no longer allows this feature. It’s a simple
thing, but it’s a pain in the back (only lower) to me.
So, thank you Katwoman (What was your mother thinking when she named you that?) for your help in trying to
help me reach my goal. As it turns out, I’ve just downloaded GIMP in hopes of making myself as proficient in it
as I am in photoshop. But, because of the Photoshop keyboard shortcuts and my use of them,
jmza I guess that I’m stuck with
Photoshop. But I think that I’m going to downgrade to Version 7 or I’m going to load Ver. 7 and work with it
to see if there are any habits I have picked up using CS2. jmz

Pico,
It isn’t really a question of deserving. . . I’m not really sure what a onc-click installer is. If it had been installed with the program (CS2) and not needed any kind of installer, it wouldn’t have mattered. It just wasn’t what I wanted.
Everybody "deserves" to get an answer to their technical question. I hate it that I got impatient, but no one addressed the question that I asked. I believe that I was clear in my request, but possibly no one ever had the earlier versions of Photoshop. I don’t really know when CS2 came out. I got CS2 last year in January, Upgraded from version 7. I don’t really know how long I used version 7; I upgraded from ver 6.5… and so on. I don’t just go out and buy an upgrade because the program upgrades. I upgraded from ver
6.5 because my disk got a ding on the back of the disk and it wouldn’t load.
This software is expensive. They keep adding Bells and whistles, but really it’s the same stuff. I’m in the video/media industry and we did the same basic work with no computers, long before PS came out.
Anyway, if I somehow offended you enough to make you believe that I didn’t deserve something that I may have needed, I’m sorry.
