layers locked together

Hi I’ve been using adobe photoshop 6 for a couple of years just for home use & just learning to use layers. What I am experiencing is that when I save my work & go back into it all the layers are locked.
Why & how do I get over this?

First off, Reset Prefs and look again.

In what file format are you saving? You need to be saving as PSD to preserve all possible data.
